Which Permanent Makeup Service Is Right for You?

If you’ve been thinking about permanent makeup but aren’t sure what service to book, you’re not alone. Microblading, powder brows, combination brows, lip blushing, color correction, saline removal—the options can feel overwhelming when you’re just trying to figure out what will work best for you.

The good news? You don’t need to know exactly what you need before you come in.

The right permanent makeup service depends on your skin type, natural features, lifestyle, previous permanent makeup and, most importantly, the result you’re hoping to achieve.

Here’s a simple guide to help you get started.

If You Want Natural, Fuller-Looking Brows

If your brows are sparse, uneven or missing hair in certain areas, microblading may be a good option.

Microblading creates fine, hair-like strokes designed to mimic your natural brow hairs. The goal isn’t to give you an obviously “tattooed” brow—it’s to create the appearance of more natural brow hair.

Microblading tends to work best for clients with normal to dry skin who want a soft, natural result.

If you have oily skin, larger pores in the brow area or certain types of previous permanent makeup, another technique may give you better healed results.

What if I want more definition?

If you love the look of softly filled-in brows, powder brows may be a better fit.

Instead of creating individual hair strokes, powder brows use soft shading to build definition and fullness. They can be customized from very soft and natural to a more defined makeup look as pictured.

Powder brows are also a great option for many clients with oily or combination skin.

Want a little of both?

That’s where combination brows come in.

Combination brows blend hair-like strokes with soft shading. This can give you the natural appearance of individual hairs while adding fullness and definition where you need it.

What If I Already Have Old Permanent Makeup?

This is where we want you to stop before simply booking another brow appointment.

Old permanent makeup needs to be evaluated first.

If your previous brows have faded into an unwanted color but the shape and pigment are still workable, color correction may be an option.

However, if the brows are very dark, oversaturated, uneven or the shape needs to be changed, saline lightening or removal may be recommended before new permanent makeup is added.

Adding more pigment isn't always the solution.

Sometimes creating beautiful new brows means lightening the old work first.

If you have previous permanent makeup—even if it’s several years old—starting with a consultation is the safest choice.

If You Want More Color in Your Lips

If your lips have lost some of their natural color, appear uneven or you simply want more definition, lip blushing may be right for you.

Lip blushing creates a soft wash of color while enhancing the natural shape and definition of your lips.

It can be especially helpful for clients who want their lips to look more balanced or want a little more color without applying lipstick every day.

One important distinction: lip blushing doesn't add volume. It isn't a replacement for lip filler. Instead, we're working with color and definition to enhance the lips you already have.

What About Scars and Stretch Marks?

Permanent makeup isn't limited to brows and lips.

Paramedical tattooing can be used in certain cases to help camouflage scars and stretch marks.

Scar and stretch mark camouflage uses customized pigments to help reduce the contrast between lighter healed tissue and the surrounding skin.

However, not every scar or stretch mark should be tattooed.

The age, color, texture and condition of the skin all matter, which is why these services begin with a consultation.

Sometimes the best professional recommendation is actually not to tattoo an area—and we'll always be transparent about that.

Areola Restoration

Areola tattooing is another specialized form of paramedical tattooing.

Using customized color, shape, shading and dimensional techniques, an areola can be created or restored following breast surgery, reconstruction or other changes to the breast.

Because every person's situation is different, this is a highly customized service and begins with a private consultation.

What If I Just Want Something Small?

Permanent makeup can also be used to create subtle details like beauty marks and freckles.

These services are customized to your features, skin tone and desired result so that placement, size and color complement your face rather than looking overly uniform or artificial.

So...Which Service Should You Choose?

Here's the easiest way to think about it:

You want natural hair-like brows: Microblading may be your best option.

You want soft, filled-in brows: Consider Powder Brows.

You want hair strokes with additional fullness: Combination Brows may be right for you.

You already have permanent makeup: Start with a consultation for correction or removal.

You want more lip color and definition: Consider Lip Blushing.

You want to camouflage scars or stretch marks: Start with a Paramedical Tattoo Consultation.

You're still not sure: That's exactly what consultations are for.

You Don't Have to Figure It Out Alone

Choosing permanent makeup shouldn't feel like picking a service from a menu and hoping you chose correctly.

Your skin, features, existing pigment and goals should all be considered before deciding on a technique.

So if you've been scrolling through before-and-after photos trying to decide between microblading, powder brows, lip blushing or another service, don't worry about having all the answers before you reach out.

We'll help you find the service that's right for you.
